Profile of an Online-Dating Scammer
One of the best ways to protect yourself from falling for an online dating scammer is to know how to identify one. Here’s a list of common profile traits to look out for – if your online love matches several of these characteristics, consider proceeding with caution and take steps to protect yourself until you’re sure.
He says that he is new to online dating and that a friend recommended that he give it a try.
Both of his parents are dead.
He has one child.
He was previously married, but his wife either lied to him or cheated on him, or she had a rough death that he doesn’t want to talk about.
He works as a general contractor with contracts overseas.
He says he is willing to relocate.
He falls for you very quickly.
He periodically questions your trust in him.
He frequently says things like: “Trust me”, “I cherish you”, or “I’ll never let you down”.
He may ask you for intimate pictures, which he can later blackmail you with.
He promises to meet you but never actually sets a date.
His English grammar does not match his supposed education level.
He is technologically challenged.
He talks a lot about the future and how much he loves you.
He will make you feel guilty if you don’t fully reciprocate his affection.
If you are wondering if your online man is real, try these steps to help you keep yourself safe:
If you move your communication away from the dating website, don’t just switch to regular text messages. We recommend using WhatsApp because it allows you to delete your text messages from both your and his message history if/when you choose to. Another app called Signal Private Messenger has the option to have your message disappear after it’s read by the receiver.
Prepare what you’ll say if he asks you to send money to him. He will likely have a great story that will tug at your heartstrings. You have to be strong to resist giving into his story and say “NO”. One way to consider saying “no” might be: “I’m sorry but I don’t have anything extra that is liquid right now. I wish I did so that I could help you.”
Do a reverse phone number lookup and a reverse address lookup to help determine if the information he’s given you is accurate. If the phone number comes back as a VOIP and is untraceable, that is not a good sign.
Do a reverse image search to confirm that the picture you have of him is not from a magazine or a stock photo online.
If everything seems too good to be true, consider hiring a private investigator. We recommend using Universal Investigations for a background check. It’s worth the money for the peace of mind and security of your heart. The investment will save you money in the end.
How to Start
Healing Your Heart
If you’ve already fallen victim to an online dating scam, here are a few first steps to take in your healing process:
Listen to Heart Chakra Healing Meditation on You Tube. Keep it on in the background or listen while you sleep. It will help to heal you.
Talk to someone - Keeping all of your emotions locked inside helps to keep the pain alive. Talking about your experiences helps to release the pain, and it gives you the momentum you need to move on. We recommend Bonnie Duarte, Grief and Loss Coach, and/or Beth Ostrander. who will support you with stopping to make yourself wrong.
Speak to an accountant to create a plan for financial recovery. Linda Spencer, CA understood exactly what I was going though.
